Membership
At Ambassador we believe that every Christian ought to be a member of a local church. Those who aren’t Christians are always welcome at any of our activities, but we encourage those who are Christians to commit to Ambassador in a formal way through membership.
Why should I become a member?
We believe there are many advantages to membership:
- It allows us to grow as disciples of Christ by being part of a community where other people are committed to our growth and we are committed to theirs.
- Church membership draws us into relationship with many different kinds of people and we believe this diversity glorifies and honours Christ.
- Church membership places us under the care of a specific group of church leaders who we recognize and who are committed to our welfare.
- Membership also pushes back against our natural individualism and helps us be accountable to others.
Where is this in the Bible?
Although such concepts are often neglected in the modern church, we believe that they are clearly taught in the Bible – for instance, through the metaphors that Jesus uses for the church of a flock or a vine, the “one another” sayings in the New Testament that remind us of our responsibilities to each other, or the passages on church discipline, which clearly assume a defined group of people.
Becoming a member
Membership at Ambassador is open to all Christians who are in agreement with our statement of faith who attend regularly and have been baptised. As a church, Ambassador teaches and practices believer’s baptism. However, we practice what is called “open membership” where we will also accept into membership believers in Christ who have received a recognized Christian baptism as infants.
The process for becoming a member is as follows:
- Attending a membership information meeting (usually held at least once a month)
- A short informal interview with at least one of our elders, where you will have opportunity to share how you became a Christian
- Affirming our church statement of faith and promises
- Being welcomed into membership on a Sunday morning
